Curating Organisms with Unique Features on Padlet

How do we deep-dive into subjects that students have an elementary understanding of already? Students are more engaged when they can relate to what they are learning. As a Science teacher, I try to use as many hands-on activities as possible. But, how can you engage students when hands-on activities aren’t possible? The answer: Empower your students to create content!

When I begin my Heredity and Adaptation unit, one “hook” is to show a slideshow of different organisms with unique features. However, instead of showing pre-made slides, I have my students create their own class collection of uniquely featured organisms to share with each other. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn, analyze, and develop better understanding of biological concepts.

Using Padlet, your students can curate and create shareable content. Padlet has a variety of formats to choose from, but I use “Wall with sections (shelf)” when I want to use categories.

Next, type your instructions and create the sections/categories you want (you can add as many as you need!).

Invite your students to add to the Padlet by copying and pasting the link in Schoology.

Students can add pictures and text to cultivate an interactive board that others can access and comment on.

Students can post as much as they want and, as a teacher, you can facilitate discussion surrounding their own findings and understanding!

Padlet is an easy way to share content and collaborate! Feel free to reach out to me, if you have any questions!
